Mark Twain's "The Lowest Animal" activity
  • Watch the first 3 minutes and 28 seconds of the video, "How to Write a Satire"
  • Read and annotate "The Lowest Animal" by Mark Twain, number the paragraphs (there should be 25 paragraphs total), and answer the multiple-choice questions. In order for you to receive credit for your answers on the multiple-choice questions (#1-13), you must do two things:
         1. Find the answer directly in the text, highlight it, and put the number of the question it answers next to it.
         2. Put the paragraph number where you found your answer next to the question
#14-15 require deeper thought about the text. Your answers must be in complete sentences and you must have textual evidence (quotes)         to back up or support your claims. Your answer should have your response, a quote for support, then an explanation of how the quote you         chose supports your response.
  •  Read the Time magazine article, "The Man in the Water" by Roger Rosenblatt. Answer questions #1-11 and follow the directions on the sheet.
  • All of this is included in "The Lowest Animal" packet (PDF) attached below

Huck Finn Unit tools

We will be reading the majority of Huck Finn in class; however, whatever is unfinished during class becomes the student's responsibility to read and annotate for homework. All the chapter sets are listed on the calendar, and students are responsible for being caught up on the reading before coming to class. This includes absences. If you are absent, read the assigned chapters you missed before coming to class the next day. Reading quizzes will be given periodically throughout the unit, and students will be responsible for completing them when they are in class regardless of absences.

Timed Write

ACT Timed Write Information (click link) - Please read through this informational packet about the ACT timed write before we practice in class (see calendar for dates when we will be completing timed writes in class). In this attachment, you will find information, links, and the rubric used to grade the ACT timed write. You will have 40 minutes to complete your timed write in class. Since the ACT does not typically allow extra time, you will not be allowed any extra time in class.
Here is a link to a sample prompt and sample scored papers based on this prompt. http://www.actstudent.org/writing/sample/ The prompts you have in class will be structured similarly to this sample prompt; however, the content will be based on the themes of Huckleberry Finn.
*If you are not satisfied with your grade, you can come in after school for extra time to fix/complete your timed write, and your grade will be updated. I suggest you follow the guidelines and suggestions in the attachment to improve your writing.
Below is a PDF with helpful tips and tricks on how to write a persuasive essay. See the "Writing Unit" tab (under semester 1) for help with essay organization, brainstorming, fine tuning, and look through the notes you've taken in class as well as your past essays for feedback.

Quarter 3 Extra Credit
There will be multiple opportunities for students to receive extra credit during quarter 3. Since I will not be accepting late work past a certain point this quarter, I encourage students to complete the extra credit in case their grade needs a boost at the end of the quarter. Opportunities will be forthcoming. Nothing late will be accepted. Students are responsible for checking the website for updates and directions about extra credit. Students must ask me themselves about extra credit (do not send a friend, or have your parent email me).

Opportunity #1 (Feb. 13) - SweetTart dance (see Ms. Chamberlin, in person, with questions about the directions for this assignment)
Opportunity #2 (Feb. 24-27)- Seussical the Musical (click link) - please read attached instructions
Opportunity #3 (Feb. 26 & 29) - Huck Finn review packet - due with your annotations. Counts for bonus points on the test
